From 3x Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Habiba Nosheen, and executive produced by Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, Mariska Hargitay, and Trish Adlesic, The Gymnasts of Fisherman Colony offers a rare, cinematic glimpse into an unseen world: a marginalized “stateless” fishing community in Karachi where a group of young girls spark joy, confidence, and possibility through gymnastics, beginning to change not only how they see themselves, but how the world sees them.
In a place where many families lack citizenship and where girls’ futures are strictly predetermined by early marriage, an unlikely gymnastics program becomes a doorway to something extraordinary. At the center of the film is Sonia, whose turbulent journey to compete against some of the country’s top young gymnasts in the National Women’s Gymnastics Competition carries the hope of opening new doors not only for herself, but for her family as well. Her audacious pursuit becomes a moving and universal portrait of girlhood, courage, and self-belief.
This is a story of hope and quiet defiance. Through the intimate journeys of three teenagers we witness as their passion for gymnastics clashes wit deeply rooted expectations around what girls can and cannot do. The film follows their journey as they find themselves straddling two polar opposite worlds as they push to make space for themselves through the sport. The result is a lyrical and deeply human portrait of three young girls from a corner of the world we rarely see on screen. These are girls who dare to dream.
