SOMM is the story of four friends,
sommeliers, attempting to conquer an exam with one of the
lowest pass rates in the world - the prestigious Master
Sommelier Exam. This is a test that covers literally
anything having to do with the entire world of wine and
that is only the beginning of why it is so difficult. In
over fifty years, fewer than two hundred people have ever
earned the title of Master and the ones who have risked
their personal lives, their wellbeing, and often their
sanity to pull it off. Known for it?s secrecy, access to
the Court Of Master Sommeliers has always been strictly
regulated and cameras have never been allowed anywhere
near the exam? until now.
Our subjects dream to climb the highest
mountain in their profession, and their passion is
contagious. That is the most enjoyable thing about SOMM;
you empathize with our characters trying to accomplish
something you didn?t even know existed. When the end of
the movie finally comes, it is both tragic and inspiring.
Then you think back and wonder when it was ever about wine
Filming took place over three years in
six countries around the world, the bulk of which took
place in the United States, Germany, France, and Italy.
The crew also filmed helicopter shots over the Rhine River
in Germany, dolly shots in Tuscany Italy, and time-lapse
photography in Burgundy, France.
Although SOMM is about something most
people have never heard of and of passion many have never
experienced? its themes are universal and make for a
